It\u2019s May 2025, and I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve heard enough of it by now (you\u2019ve already met your quota for this decade). Unfortunately, it\u2019s here to stay and, just like improv, we need to quickly adapt to an ever-changing world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Insights: Tips for Opting Out of AI Training on Social Media<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regularly review and adjust your privacy settings on each social media platform to opt out of AI training where possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understand that uploading content to social media may contribute to AI training, especially on platforms without opt-out options; weigh visibility benefits against potential long-term risks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stay informed about platform policy changes and use official tutorials or guides to protect your creative work from unauthorized AI use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an artist, actor or anyone with a creative background, it\u2019s a <strong>really weird time<\/strong> to have a portfolio to showcase your abilities. You <em>could<\/em> have your own professional website, but that costs money. It could also take time to set up properly and your work may not get the visibility it deserves. That\u2019s where social media and the following perks come in:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Social media is free\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social media is already set up for you\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It has a relatively easy learning curve<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your posts are easy to share and get visibility\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That being said, let\u2019s take a quick step back to the \u201cfree\u201d part of social media. Using the product <em>is<\/em> free, but it could come at a very large cost. Remember, if something is free, you aren\u2019t the customer, <strong>you\u2019re the product<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you\u2019re posting on Instagram, TikTok, Bluesky, X, Facebook or LinkedIn, you\u2019re creating content and contributing to a platform that makes money off of your creative abilities. In some cases, the least creative people flourish the most on social media. As the social media manager for Casting Networks, ask me how I know!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What \u201ccost\u201d could be associated with uploading your headshots, reels, auditions or skits to social media?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did you know that you may be inadvertently helping train these social media companies\u2019 AI for content creation purposes? With every upload, you\u2019re teaching the system how things \u201cshould look\u201d or feel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember how not too long ago, AI had a really hard time creating images with hands and fingers? The more hands that are uploaded to the system, the better it will get at learning how to render these in the future. It will learn how bulb flashes and shadows look under certain conditions, and be able to replicate it seamlessly. We\u2019re already seeing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It could feel like you\u2019re planting the seeds for your replacement \u2014 a company no longer needs hand models, it can just generate one with their product instantly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I get it. As a creative myself, I feel the same way \u2026 Every. Single. Day. There are some ways for you to be proactive and protect yourself on social media by opting yourself, and your content, out of AI training.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like improv, we must adapt and continue the scene.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following tutorials will help guide you through the AI opt-out process, including third-party tracking in general, on the biggest social media platforms. The steps are relatively simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/privacy\/policy\/version\/25238980265745528\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">View the new privacy policy<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look for the box at the top, which says, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/contact\/6359191084165019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more about your right to object.<\/a>\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fill out the form with a reason such as, \u201cI wish to exercise my right under data protection law to object to my personal data being processed,\u201d which worked for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2024\/06\/14\/1093789\/how-to-opt-out-of-meta-ai-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Melissa Heikkil\u00e4 at MIT Technology Review.\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your opt-out form was successful, you\u2019ll receive a confirmation notification on Facebook and via email.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, for U.S.-based actors, there isn\u2019t a lot that you can do to opt out of Facebook\u2019s AI training. Facebook uses public content for training purposes. The best thing would be to set your account to private, which sort of defeats the purpose of a social media portfolio that you want to share with casting directors or agents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Opting Out of Instagram\/Threads AI Training<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, for EU\/UK actors, you\u2019ll want to follow the same steps as above after <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/contact\/6359191084165019\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">visiting this link<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S.-based actors are once again hamstrung when it comes to opting out of Meta\u2019s AI training. Not having the \u201cright to object\u201d is a tough pill to swallow, considering Instagram is a great platform for highlighting your talent. We believe it\u2019s still worth using, as we\u2019ve recently launched Instagram <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.castingnetworks.com\/news\/new-feature-link-your-social-media-to-your-talent-profile\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Social Linking<\/a>, which allows casting directors an easy extra opportunity to view your commitment to the craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"752\" src=\"https:\/\/www.castingnetworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-29-at-2.42.54\u202fPM.png\" alt=\"Meta's page on information used for AI training.\" class=\"wp-image-193187\" style=\"width:413px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.castingnetworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-29-at-2.42.54\u202fPM.png 624w, https:\/\/www.castingnetworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-29-at-2.42.54\u202fPM-249x300.png 249w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That being said, there technically is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/contact\/510058597920541?wtsid=rdr_0UbWQD9ynOXxsuzgz\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a form that you can fill out<\/a>, which restricts personal information from being used in AI responses (it might not be opting out, but it\u2019s something).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Opt-Out of Twitter\/X\u2019s AI Training<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twitter\u2026 X\u2026 whatever you want to call it, you can find the AI training opt-out settings in the same place. There are quite a few things you\u2019ll want to turn off:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. As with other social media sites on this list, they also now have their own AI training tools. Here\u2019s how you can turn those off:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. Go to this link <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/settings\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/settings\/blog\/<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. A red circle is around the Opt-Out checkbox.\" class=\"wp-image-193141\" style=\"width:515px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.castingnetworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ai-opt-out-screenshot-10.jpg 740w, https:\/\/www.castingnetworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ai-opt-out-screenshot-10-300x157.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike other platforms in this list, Tumblr specifically mentions training AI models in their privacy options page, saying, \u201cThe content which will <strong>not<\/strong> be shared with our licensed network of content and research partners, including those that train AI models.\u201d This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Posts and reblogs of posts from blogs that have enabled the \u201cPrevent third-party sharing\u201d option.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Posts and reblogs of posts from deleted blogs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Posts and reblogs of posts from password-protected blogs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Posts and reblogs of posts from explicit blogs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Posts and reblogs of posts from suspended\/deactivated blogs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Private posts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drafts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Messages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Asks and submissions that have not been publicly posted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Post+ subscriber-only posts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explicit posts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s more information about <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/help.tumblr.com\/hc\/articles\/115011611747%2301H692KHGF5N3SVHDV02P5W34P\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">what this setting covers<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Opt-Out of YouTube\u2019s AI Training<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YouTube is an interesting one! That setting forces you to opt out of AI training. You\u2019ll most likely want to do this on a desktop since it\u2019s an easier experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. In the top right corner, click your profile image and select \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/mypreferences\/d\/categories\/account\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Settings &amp; Privacy<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. However, IMDb is a subsidiary of Amazon. To (potentially) opt out of AI training, go into the \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/privacyprefs?ref_=footer_iba\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Your Ads Privacy Choices\u201d<\/a> section of your Amazon account and select \u201cOpt out of cross-context behavioral ads.\u201d This isn\u2019t necessarily protecting you from AI training, but it\u2019s a way to protect yourself here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reddit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, Reddit doesn\u2019t have a setting to stop you from using it for their AI training that we\u2019re aware of. I\u2019m also unsure of how many actors and creatives are using Reddit as a portfolio for video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inb4, \u201cThere are dozens of us \u2026 dozens!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>TikTok<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The big one. At the time of this writing, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.tiktok.com\/en\/using-tiktok\/creating-videos\/ai-generated-content\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TikTok <\/a><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.tiktok.com\/en\/using-tiktok\/creating-videos\/ai-generated-content\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">does not<\/a><\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.tiktok.com\/en\/using-tiktok\/creating-videos\/ai-generated-content\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> have a setting<\/a> to opt out of AI training or third-party services. If you\u2019re uploading to TikTok, just <strong>assume your content is being used to train <\/strong>\u2026 something, somewhere, for some purpose. This may not deter many actors from using TikTok because the reach could outweigh the long-term cost (that\u2019s up to you to decide).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Discord<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not just for gamers, Discord is a social media platform that allows you to connect with like-minded people on open or private \u201cservers.\u201d In a nutshell, Discord is basically Facebook Groups. If you\u2019re on Discord and want to (possibly) opt out of AI training, you\u2019ll want to do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. Navigate to \u201cUser Settings\u201d on desktop or mobile<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"690\" height=\"234\" src=\"https:\/\/www.castingnetworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ai-opt-out-screenshot-8.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot of Discord's AI training policies. Scroll down and find \u201cHow We Use Your Data\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4. <strong>Turn these items off<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"778\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 884 \/ 778;\" width=\"884\" controls src=\"https:\/\/www.castingnetworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/RPReplay_Final1730905201.mov\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This doesn\u2019t guarantee that you\u2019ll be opted out of AI training, but it\u2019s a good start to protecting yourself. You can read Discord\u2019s privacy policies <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.discord.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/21864805694999-Data-Used-to-Improve-Discord\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/discord.com\/privacy\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>, as well as a blog post from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/discord.com\/blog\/ai-on-discord-your-place-for-ai-with-friends\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anjney Midha<\/a> about Discord\u2019s new chatbots. Midha\u2019s post mentions that \u201cOpenAI cannot use Discord user data to train its general models\u201d several times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether opting out of AI training will actually protect you from it in the long run is up for debate.
